INSOMNIA. Teetering with the excitement of my newfound freedom, a laundry list of things to do, passing like cars on a freight train two miles long. Both the beauty and burden of working for oneself.

Did I forget to mention that I quit my desk job last Wednesday? In preparation for my final chapter of four years with Virginia’s judiciary, I may have forgotten to write you much these past few weeks.

They threw me a most generous exit party equipped with a gi-normous cake, presents galore, and an open house for the entire building to eat cake and bid me a merry farewell. For my last lunch with the front office, the ladies treated me to my favorite brunch at Cafe Gutenburg. A girl couldn’t have dreamed of a lovlier send-off to propel her with love and excitement for the journey ahead.

Sometimes a girl just knows it’s time for her to fly. And this little birdy has let the wind lift her wings for a new adventure.

In the fall I will be going back to school to reaquaint myself with an old flame that bears a hundred names: holistic health, alternative healing, eastern medicine, naturopathy, herbal healing, holism, mind-body wellness, homeopathy, spiritual healing, and therapeutic touch. Addressing both my psysical, psychological and spiritual well-being, so that I may, in turn, help others, I have decided to become a massage therapist.

I start the program in September. Until then I am full throttle wielding my hammer and torch, working from home, selling in my Etsy store, and at weekend festivals, developing my number one passion, my jewelry biz, Dream Spiral Art.

I must admit, though, I am a little scared. Sometimes when the heart has desired something so precious for so long, it is frightening to finally embrace it.

The unknowns jut out like jagged rocks along a road of mountain switchbacks. But I know that perspective is not achieved when dwelling at the bottom so it’s time to put on my hiking boots and begin the ascent.

POST SCRIPT: All birdy photos are compliments of my bird-man-in-residence (the one who really makes my wings soar), SMB.

I have been re-reading “The Prophet” by Kahlil Gibran lately. The excerpt ON LOVE is beautiful and I’d like to have it read at our wedding next spring.

In companionship with contemplating beginning a new life in marriage next year, I have been contemplating my (non-jewelry) job situation lately, praying for guidance and asking for affirmation that my instincts are not misleading me.

Two nights ago, with these questions burning in my mind, I randomly opened “The Prophet” and my eyes landed on this exerpt:

“Work is love made visible.
And if you cannot work with love but only with distaste, it is better that you should leave your work and sit at the gate of the temple and take alms of those who work with joy.

For if you bake bread with indifference, you bake a bitter bread that feeds but half man’s hunger.
And if you grudge the crushing of the grapes, your grudge distils a poison in the wine.

And if you sing though as angels, and love not the singing, you muffle man’s ears to the voices of the day and the voices of the night.” – Kahlil Gibran

Speaking of work, I can’t wait for my studio day tomorrow so that I can share some of my new (jewelry) work with you!

For the past four weeks SMB and I have been working hard to put the finishing touches on our flower beds that generously encircle half the house. With so much ground to cover, we’ve been planting in batches.

I am happy to report that after a trip to our local plant nursery (support the little guys), and a heavy dose of pine-bark nugget mulch, we are content to stand back and admire our hard work. Dare I say it’s finished? I guess gardens, like everything else in life, require tending, pruning, refining, but for sanity’s sake, let’s call it finished.

We took advantage of an unusually warm weekend back in April and were able to put the veggies in the ground early this year. We already have little green tomatoes bursting from the vines. I love the smell of tomato plants, rubbing the green leaves between my fingers. If there were a tomato-vine perfume or soap, point me in the right direction, and I’d buy it!

In addition to the tomatoes, we have sugar snap peas, eggplant, three types of squash, string beans, peppers, and we even built a little section for our herbs (basil, cilantro, dill), potted strawberries, and fig tree. If the critters keep out this year, we should have an abundant harvest!

I guess all of the green-thumbing, coupled with my latest mantra “BLOOM WHERE YOU’RE PLANTED”, got me hammering out silver flowers in my jewelry shop. These little beauties are fresh off the bench and are for sale NOW in my Etsy shop today. I have four pair in stock.

Every flower needs a name, so after some pondering, I have decided to call them, “Modern Mums”. They are part of my ever-growing “Captured Collection”.

The fiance and I have been working hard this spring to spruce up the old farmhouse.

Why? You ask.

Because it looks like we are going to stay a while. Not only have our azaelas and hydrangeas finally begun to take root, but I have to admit, that I have been blooming here, as well. Call it a biproduct of caring for the space between and around these knotty-pine paneled walls, but for the first time in my 3 years living here, I’ve truly felt attached to this place. It is no longer just a transitional dwelling. It is our HOME. So we are tailoring it to our needs and fluffing the nest, so to speak.

Also, it must be mentioned that on Wednesday, my parents fly in for their annual week-long visit with us here at Chateau Beck. It’s not that my parents really care what state the old farmhouse is in, but it certainly motivates us to spruce the place up to make their stay more comfortable.

So here’s what we’ve been doing…

SMB not only scraped the paint off all the windows, but he also reglazed them, which is necessary for maintenance, he tells me.

While SMB did that (I am scared of heights), I stayed safely on the ground, touching up trim and painting the floor of our freshly screened-in porch. Thank goodness I am marrying a carpenter, who did all of the framing and screening and hanging of doors, while I was the master painter on this project. He works on the big picture and I do the details. Speaking of details, after the floor was painted we decided to splurge on a new set of patio furniture.

On Thursday afternoon SMB assembled the furniture, so when I came home from work, I was able to put my feet up and enjoy a cold one outside in a mosquito-free haven! Even the kitties got to come out and enjoy the nice spring weather with us.

Well, all but Spout, she is still a little tentative about all the new noises of the outdoor space, but she does peek out her perky white ears from time to time.

I get the bug (so to speak) about twice a year to really tidy up the studio. This involves a lot of vacumning as the ladybugs, spiders, and stink bugs are quite attracted to my sunny workspace during the cooler months.

Although it only took me a couple of hours to tidy up, I couldn’t help but question if it was a productive use of the one day a week I get to work in my studio. I did manage to finish up a commission for the amazing Judie and ship out a few other packages, but one day a week is not much time for the creative muse to bring my metal dreams to life.

While cleaning my studio, I thought about John R., a jewelry store owner who I interned with while in college. John’s shop was messy, messy, messy! Crusted white flux and acid spills blossoming like fractals from every surface of his workbench, dirt, dust, polishing grime floating in the air, hand tools strewn about. I was amazed that he could find anything in his shop. But he did.

When I asked him how he could work in such a messy space, he told me a story about one of his jeweler friends. The friend’s shop was always immaculate, everything had it’s place, the shop vac ran daily. But the friend spent so much time keeping the shop clean that it left him with little time to work on commissions. Before long, the friend’s shop went out of business. John’s shop may have been messy, but he always had customers coming and going.

In the words of Dr. Seuss, “life is a great balancing act.” You’ve got to keep your studio clean (your lungs will thank you), but know when it’s time to put the vacumn away and pull out your favorite hammer!

(And, yes, I am very aware of my dorkiness unveiled in this self portrait).

I discovered Virginia’s motto, “Virginia is for Lovers,” to be quite true, in fact. On January 21, 2009, while sitting by the fireplace in our 100-year old farmhouse, my boyfriend of 3.5 years, asked me to marry him!

Michael and I met in May of 2005 when I decided to relocate from my hometown of St. Louis, MO to Richmond, VA. I was interested in pursuing my MFA degree and, although I had applied for the graduate program at VCU in Richmond, I hadn’t been accepted. The strange thing is that, although I was accepted into two other graduate programs (CSU and SCAD), a string of ‘meaningful coincidences’ left me with an overwhelming desire to move to Richmond instead.

I decided to move to Richmond to take undergrad classes at VCU and reapply for the graduate program later. So I contacted the then-head of the metals department, Jim Meyer, and arranged to fly to Richmond to meet with him. I was only in town for a day and a half and had to, not only set-up classes with VCU, but also, to find (and sign a lease for) the place where I would live when I moved half-way across the country.

As fate would have it, the day I met with Jim Meyer at VCU also happened to be the day of the Genesis Design competition held for VCU’s metal/jewelry students at Schwartzchild Jewelers. Jim invited me to the opening and it was there that I met Michael.

Six weeks later, I loaded all of my possessions into a medium-sized U-Haul truck, and with the help of my brother, I made the cross-country trek to Virginia. Michael and I had talked on the phone and emailed almost daily during those six weeks after we met, so when I finally arrived in Richmond at my new apartment, he was there waiting to help me carry my belongings up three flights of stairs in the mid-summer heat.

I am truly blessed to have met my life partner. And I must say, from my perspective, Virginia has definitely lived up to it’s motto: “Virginia is For Lovers.”

Here’s a pic of our wedding rings - one of a kind pieces, designed by C. James (Jim) Meyer himself.

We are getting married in Virginia on May 22, 2010!

Today, March 20, is the first day of Spring 2009. After a week of rain, the sun is finally shining, and I, like a cat, want to curl up and bask my bones in it’s warm light. Alas, I am stuck indoors, behind interior walls, the computer monitor the brightest beacon in this room. I’m pretty sure I know what the kitty-kids are up to at home right now, though, and I think of them with envy. Did you know that cats sleep an average of 22 hours a day?!? What a life of luxury! I honestly don’t think I could stand it.

Ruminating on my current fate, stuck indoors on a sunny day, I relate to this quote:

“How long can men thrive between walls of brick, walking on asphalt pavements, breathing the fumes of coal and of oil, growing, working, dying, with hardly a thought of wind, and sky, and fields of grain, seeing only machine-made beauty, the mineral-like quality of life?” ~Charles A. Lindbergh, Reader’s Digest, November 1939

Three and a half years ago, on July 4, Independence Day 2005, I relocated from my home town, St. Louis to the East coast. I had lived in St. Louis my entire life, aside from a brief, brilliant, seven month adventure living in Tasmania, Australia and traveling around the South Pacific.

<

When I was 26, I remember the sting of several relationships broken, the stacatto screams of discontent with my current job, an aching in my bones to leave a city that generations of family called 'home'. Deciding to relocate was the easy part.

Where do I go, What will I do, How will I survive? An assalt of questions and self-doubt crossed my mind with a cold, burning sensation, like sleet on bare skin. Worse were the interrogations from family and friends, not wanting me to move.

A large part of my eagerness to live in a different city was my desire to continue developing my artistic vision in an environment that would provide opportunities to exhibit work, garner critical feedback, and grow as an individual and as an artist. So I decided to further my education in my field of jewelry/metalsmithing.

I narrowed down my search to three schools in three locations that seemed desirable to live in. I've always enjoyed smaller, pedestrian and artist-friendly cities, living among like-minded young people, in a geographically diverse setting.

I chose Fort Collins, CO (CSU), Savannah, GA (SCAD), and Richmond, VA (VCU). And to my surprise, I was accepted into two out of three of the schools. But for some reason, the one that I was truly drawn to, was the one that didn’t accept me, VCU. I had been put on a wait list for the program – only two spots available each year in the MFA metals program.

So in 2005, I took a chance and loaded all of my possessions into a medium-sized U-Haul truck, and with the help of my brother, I made the cross-country trek to Richmond, VA. Although, I was not accepted into the MFA program at VCU, I continued my studies there for two years, and realized that it wasn’t the actual degree I was after, merely the time and space to develop my work in an educational setting, with access to tools and instruction.

I have no regrets whatsoever about relocating to Richmond on a whim. I followed my intuition, going against what was logical, and in the process, I met a most wonderful man, who I adore, my Sugar.

For my 31st birthday last weekend, I wanted to explore a path not taken. I had already visited CSU in Fort Collins, CO, but I was still curious about Savannah, GA. I had, not only received an invitation to enter the MFA program there, but I had been granted a partial scholarship… to which I gave serious consideration. So we kissed the kitties (Potter, Albus, and Sprout) goodbye and loaded up the X-Terra for the 7 hour drive South.

I discovered that even on the coldest weekend of the year, Savannah, was hauntingly beautiful. There is no doubt I would have loved living there in the Historic District amidst the many parks, city river, and nearby sandy beaches. Savannah is a city rich with history, old architecture, art galleries, restaurants, and boutiques, Spanish moss dangling from every tree. And who could forget the alligators lurking in the marsh across the river, waiting for an unsuspecting coot or egret to venture near? In this case, my Sugar and I were the unsuspecting passers-by, initially mistaking a sunning 8-foot gator for a log in the grass… that is… until we got just a little closer to Mrs. Ali Gator and saw her toothy underbite.

As much as I enjoyed wandering around Savannah for my birthday weekend (even bumping into Ruben Studdard in the hotel elevator), I enjoyed even more, being able to share the experience with my most kindred spirit, and best friend, Michael, knowing I had taken the right path all along.

Ever since I moved to Richmond, my ears have been buzzing with the term “indie-Art.” So in my quest for enlightenment on the topic of Indie-Art, I’ve had to do a little research.

Although a common string of adjectives, that include: retro, vintage, bizarre, alternative, edgy, and handmade, popped up frequently during my investigation, I really appreciated this definition from good ole Webster:

Indie:1 : one that is independent; especially an unaffiliated record or motion-picture production company
2 : something (as a record or film) produced by an indie

Apparantly, the term “indie” was originally associated with the music and film-making industries. (Much to my dismay, “indie,” has nothing at all to do with Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom or Native American Indians). “Indie” is short for “independant.” Therefore, indie-art, is art that is made by the independant or unafilliated artist.

That leads to my next question: If an artist or craftsperson is represented by a gallery or multiple galleries, does that mean that they are no longer considered an indie-artist? Because by definition we are talking about independance, right? Non-affiliation. Self-representation.

Furthermore, the term, “indie-art,” paints similar mind-images as terms like “Bohemiam” or “Gypsy-esque.” Is indie-art a sort of self-removed subculture of art? Okay, now I’m really confused, because, aren’t artists, by nature, already somewhat removed from the mainstream? Are Indie-artists extra independant? Or is this term just extra redundant?

Recently the girls at work (totally hip, cute, early twenty-somethings) introduced me to FaceBook, an assured me that other ’seniors’ like myself network through FaceBook. It looked more appealing than MySpace, to be honest… a little less trashy, quieter, and minus the schizophrenic animations that characterize the MySpace accounts I’ve viewed. Well, obviously, I’m a little reluctant about the whole thing, so I haven’t set up an account yet. I will definately keep you posted, if I succumb to the temptation to enter this particular facet of the cyber world, but for now, I wobble on the fence of indecision. But look! Just to my left, a gate has opened… and I’ve discovered that my interview has been published on the JET MySpace account.
Oh my God! I only have one week left of class! We have our final crit in 7 days! After two years of parking, I am packing up my locker.

It was a tough decision, but I decided to go ahead and cut the apron strings between myself and the amazing metals studio at VCU. I’ve been taking metals/jewelry classes there since I relocated to Richmond. Now it’s time to take what I’ve learned and use it in my own studio. I won’t have all the great tools, but as G.I.Joe always said (this goes out to all you 80’s kids who know what I am talking about)… “Knowing is half the battle.”

I’m excited to take this leap and see what the rest of 2007 brings for Dream Spiral Art’s creative endeavors.

I departed the icy airs of my birth city, St. Louis, on Superbowl Sunday. While most Americans huddled around their televisions, feasting on bean dip and wings, entertained by the lastest installments of creative advertisement, if not by Peyton Manning’s renowned gyrations, I pressed my face against the cold glass of the airplane window and wondered at the Full Snow Moon, in between gulps of cran-apple juice, and essays by Barbara Kingsolver.

The Full Snow Moon was named as such by the native american tribes of the north and east because the heaviest snow usually fell during that moon/month. Some tribes also referred to this moon as the Full Hunger Moon since the harsh weather conditions often made hunting and gathering difficult during February.

Whatever the name, the moon was certainly a sight to behold on February 4th – something that the flight attendant (bless her heart) was not shy to point out to the ten or so passengers aboard the flight. Sadly, not everyone shared her enthusiam for this particularly large and yellowish moon, hanging like an ornament right outside the window, and therefore, left their blinds drawn or resumed reading or napping upon discovering what the excitment was all about.

I suppose the things that we witness everyday, are those that we most easily take for granted – like the moon, the rising sun, people we love, good food in our bellies, the abilities to walk and talk. Ironic how when something is absent, it is oftentimes noticed more than when it is present.
